A custom poly bag quote is only as fast and accurate as the spec behind it. When a request arrives with the bag type, size, gauge, quantity, printing and delivery date already settled, a manufacturer can price it the same day. When details are missing, the quote turns into a week of back-and-forth emails.
This guide walks through the eight details Excellent Poly needs to quote a custom order. Have them ready and our U.S.-based team can send your quote within 24 hours. Custom orders start at 30,000 units.

1. Bag type
Start with the style of bag. Common choices include wicketed bags, poly mailer bags, header bags, staple pack bags, resealable tape closure bags, die-cut handle bags, patch handle bags, drawtape bags and flat bags. See the full product line for more.
Not sure which style fits? Choose "Other" and describe how the bag will be used. That is often enough for us to recommend a style.
2. Width and length
Give dimensions in inches, width first. Width is measured across the opening. Length runs from the opening to the bottom of the bag.
Measure your product at its widest and thickest point, not its flat size. A product with depth needs extra width and length to fit. If the bag has a gusset, flap, lip or header, note its size in the additional details and say whether your dimensions include it.
3. Thickness (gauge)
Poly bag thickness is measured in mils (thousandths of an inch). Our quote form offers 1 to 3 mil in quarter-mil steps, and heavier gauges on request.
As a rough starting point:
- About 1 to 1.5 mil: lightweight items such as baked goods, produce and soft retail goods
- About 2 to 3 mil: shipping, heavier products and repeated handling
- Above 3 mil: heavy, sharp or industrial contents
If you're unsure, tell us what goes in the bag and we'll recommend a gauge. Over-specifying adds cost; under-specifying risks tears and returns.
4. Quantity
Our minimum order is 30,000 units. Standard quote quantities run from 30,000 to 500,000, and larger runs are available.
If you're between two volumes, ask for pricing at both. Per-bag cost typically drops as quantity rises, and seeing both numbers helps you decide how much to order per run.
5. Printing and number of colors
Tell us whether the bags are printed and how many ink colors the design uses. We print up to 10 colors.
Count each distinct ink color in your artwork. If you print on both sides, or the front and back designs differ, say so in the additional details. Brand colors should be specified by Pantone (PMS) number so they match from run to run.
6. Delivery date
Give the date you need bags in hand, not the date you'd like to order. Our standard lead time is 2 to 3 weeks from artwork approval. Because we manufacture in the USA, there is no ocean freight or customs time to add.
If the date is tied to a launch, a season or a line changeover, mention it. A firm date helps us plan the run.
7. What goes in the bag and how it's packed
Use the additional details box on the quote form to cover anything the fields don't:
- What the bag holds, and roughly how much it weighs
- How bags are loaded: by hand, or on automated or wicket-fed equipment
- Closure type, such as resealable tape, permanent tape, drawtape or none
- Whether the bag will contact food
- Any special features, such as tamper-evident seals, sequential numbering or hang holes
- Material requirements, if you have them (polyethylene or polypropylene)
- Whether this replaces a bag you already use, and that bag's current spec
This is where most quote delays come from. A sentence or two here saves a round of questions.
8. Artwork for custom printing
You don't need final artwork to get a quote, but having it ready speeds up production once you order. Three things keep a print job on schedule:
- Send vector files (AI, EPS or PDF)
- Specify brand colors by Pantone number
- Convert all text to outlines
Fixing artwork after proofing is one of the most common reasons a production start slips.
Common spec mistakes
- Measuring the product flat instead of at its packed size
- Leaving gauge blank when the contents are heavy or sharp
- Requesting a quantity below the 30,000 minimum
- Giving an order date instead of an in-hand date
- Counting "full color" instead of the actual number of ink colors
